NewsReal is a social initiative led by students created with the purpose of focusing on strengthening media literacy, independent communication skills, and critical news consumption among students from underserved communities. The project aims to tackle the challenges related to navigating complex forms of digital information, wherein young people often encounter biased narratives, misinformation, and fragmented sources of information and news.
The approach of the initiative is to combine media literacy education with practical learning experiences. This is done by identifying learning resources and accessible guides through which the initiative seeks to introduce important concepts to students. These include identifying misinformation, evaluating source credibility, and approaching the consumption of news in an analytical and balanced manner. NewsReal also actively encourages students to engage with journalism through interactive activities that, in turn, allow them to ideate, write, edit, and design their own newspaper publications.
We are not just restricted to classroom-style learning methods, and also seek to incorporate student engagement with journalists and media professionals, which helps in providing valuable insights into different roles. These refer to reporting, editing, and responsible forms of storytelling in society. The initiative also intends to create various types of opportunities for students that can enable them to showcase their reporting concepts and ideas for publication while also having good access to digital and creative tools through CSR efforts.
NewsReal, through these interventions, seeks to give media literacy and practical experiences to students in order to empower them to become thoughtful citizens. We want them to become not just thoughtful and critical consumers of news and information but also confident and articulate communicators in a digital age that is increasingly getting more and more interconnected.
